Are Those Bites From Bed Bugs? How To Tell And How To Get Rid Of These Pests

Posted on

Bed bug bites can cause itchy bumps on the body, usually on the neck, arms, hands, and legs. These bites may be confused with other types of bug bites, but the bites usually occur in a straight line. If you have multiple bites in a line on these parts of the body then they are most likely bed bug bites. Once you have deciphered that your bites are from bed bugs, it's time to find the pests and get rid of them.

Where To Look For Bed Bugs

Bed bugs can be anywhere in your home, but the first place to start looking is on your mattress. Remove all of the sheets and linens and inspect the mattress. You're looking for reddish-brown bugs that are about the size of an apple seed. Pull back the edge of the mattress and inspect all of the seams for these bugs. Remove the mattress and inspect the box spring as well. If you find any body casings or blood smears then you most likely have bed bugs in your bed. Other places to look for bed bugs include:

  • Surrounding furniture in the bedroom and in any other adjoining rooms
  • Baseboards in the room and surrounding rooms
  • Behind wall decor
  • On ceiling fans and in other light fixtures
  • Behind receptacle covers (outlet and switch)

If you've found casings or live bugs in these areas, check every single room in your home to see just how large the infestation may be. If you find bugs or signs of bugs throughout your home then it's best to call a professional bed bug exterminator to get rid of these pests. If you have only found signs in one room then read the next section to try to get rid of the bugs yourself.

How To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs

Place the mattress in a bed bug protector bag. These special bags can be found at your local mattress store or at most larger stores. Remove everything from the floor that you can such as piles of clutter and other items. Then vacuum the entire area thoroughly and empty the vacuum outside. Wipe down all of the furniture in the room with a bleach solution and kill any bugs you spot in the process. Vacuum daily until you are rid of the bugs entirely.

You can spray a pesticide that kills bed bugs specifically around the room and on furniture. Wash all linens including curtains in the hottest water possible and place decorative pillows (and anything else that you cannot wash in your machine) in a plastic bag for 48 hours to kill any bugs that may be on these.

If you have found bed bugs throughout your home then it's best to leave the job to a professional exterminator that specializes in bed bugs. Get rid of these bugs quickly and take back your home.
